A Serene Hideaway: Blending Japanese Zen and Industrial Style in a Modern Residence

Creating a Minimalist Oasis in the Heart of the City

The client's desire for a private, hidden space in the bustling city led designer Chia Hsin Chi to create a modern minimalist Zen Japanese style residence. Blending Japanese Zen and industrial elements, this unique design offers a serene hideaway for couples seeking tranquility amidst their busy lives.

Located near Houshanpi MRT Station in Taipei City, this residence was completed at the end of 2018. The design team, led by Chia Hsin Chi, carefully considered the client's preferences for a low-profile Zen style, incorporating elements of Japanese design while maintaining a modern aesthetic.

The highlight of the space is the ceiling, crafted from scented cypress wood. The intricate design resembles a three-dimensional Japanese window frame, captivating the attention of anyone who enters the room. To achieve a sustainable environment and maximize material utilization, the remaining cypress wooden veneer from the ceiling was repurposed for the Japanese room's cabinet surface, creating a comprehensive waste-free design.

The design team faced several challenges in this project. With a small interior space of only 72.7 square meters, they had to create layers and storage areas without compromising the overall aesthetic. The high ceiling space was utilized as a mezzanine, providing additional storage space accessible through a ladder. This clever solution added depth and functionality to the narrow space.

To balance the overall design, the floor features a gray-colored Pandomo with minimal division lines, allowing the high ceiling space to take center stage. The integration of black iron plates adds a touch of industrial flair, juxtaposing the gentle Zen style with sharp, modern elements. The result is a stylish and unique French industrial residence.

Precise measurements and cutting were crucial in the realization of this design. The cypress wood panels had to be precisely sized to fit the triangular ceiling, ensuring a seamless and complete shape even at the end of the wall. The remaining wood was ingeniously used for the doors and ceiling panels of the Japanese room's storage cabinets, maintaining consistency throughout the space.

This exceptional design has garnered recognition and accolades. In 2021, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

The blending of Japanese Zen and industrial style in this modern residence offers a unique and tranquil escape from the bustling city. Chia Hsin Chi's innovative approach to design has created a serene hideaway that perfectly balances minimalism, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.
